Spaced Repetition: The Revision Schedule That Beats Cramming
Why spreading reviews out beats cramming, the intervals to use, and a simple schedule you can start this week without any special software.
Spaced repetition means reviewing something several times with gradually longer gaps, instead of hammering it once and hoping. It is one of the most reliably tested findings in learning research, and it is the reason a student revising 20 minutes a day usually outperforms one doing a five-hour panic session the night before.
Why gaps make memories stronger
Every time you nearly forget something and then successfully drag it back, the memory gets more durable. Review too soon and the answer is still sitting in short-term memory, so there is no effort and no gain. Review far too late and you have to relearn from scratch.
The sweet spot is reviewing just as recall starts to feel hard. That slight struggle is the point, not a sign you are doing it wrong.
A schedule you can actually follow
You do not need an algorithm to start. Use these intervals from the day you first learn a topic:
- Day 0 — learn it and make your flashcards.
- Day 1 — first review.
- Day 3 — second review.
- Day 7 — third review.
- Day 21 — fourth review.
- Then monthly until the exam.
Anything you get wrong drops back to the start of the ladder. Anything you get right moves on to the next gap. That single rule is most of what fancy spacing software does.
Spaced repetition vs cramming
Cramming does work for about 24 hours, which is why it feels effective. The problem is that GCSEs and A-Levels test material you met eight months ago, and crammed knowledge is gone within a week. Spacing takes the same total number of hours and spreads them, which costs you nothing extra and leaves the material still there in June.
The other quiet benefit: spaced reviews are short. Fifteen minutes is enough, so it survives busy weeks in a way that marathon sessions do not.
How to combine it with retrieval practice
Spacing decides when you review; retrieval practice decides how. Always try to produce the answer before you check it — say it out loud, write it, or sketch the diagram. Reading the answer again is the version of this that feels comfortable and does almost nothing.
For essay subjects, retrieve at the level of arguments and evidence rather than single facts: "three pieces of evidence for X" is a better prompt than a definition.
Making it stick to your calendar
The reason spaced repetition fails for most students is admin: you cannot remember which topics are due. Two fixes:
- Write the next review date on the top of each set of revision notes or on the front of the deck.
